Growing Winter Vegetables: Bok Choy
We grew some bok choy this Winter. Usually we only grow it in Spring or Fall but we were feeling adventurous and decided to add it to our Winter Vegetables list. The bok choy grew pretty well considering the season, covered under some fabric (here’s my frost protection tips), but during the last week the temperatures dropped pretty low with strong winds, and unfortunately our fabric blew off. So it was time to rescue and pick the bok choy that survived this rough week. Now we have a bunch of bok choy to enjoy in big bowls of noodle soup which is exactly what I’m craving right now.
Hi Beautiful Brussels Sprouts!
Besides the bok choy, we’re also growing Brussels Sprouts which is one of my cold weather joys in the garden! There’s just something magical about watching your stalks fill with magical sprouts. Thankfully these plants are pretty hearty now and the fabric remained in tact, so they still are looking pretty good! I can’t wait to pick these in a few weeks!
Time to Compost!
We also had to drop off our weekly compost boxes filled with kitchen vegetable scraps. This is something we do usually every other weekend. Enceladus has become quite a compost helper, helping me add all the scraps into the compost bins. She also loves to howl like a wolf while we do this, that part I don’t understand, but it sure makes us (and passerby on the street) laugh. Speaking of compost, some of the compost was ready to add to our garden boxes to help feed our future plants. We added a few wheelbarrows of compost to start to prepare the Spring garden which will be here before we know it. (compost video, check out those wiggly worms!) After we did all our garden chores then we collected some rocks and played house with them. I hope you enjoyed our trip to the garden during this chilly January weekend to check out our Winter Vegetables! Check out our Seed Calendar that I’ll be updating soon with our 2020 plans. Are you growing anything in the garden right now?
