This is what we picked from the garden this past weekend, lots of goodies to snack on and prepare for dinner! September is always an interesting month in the garden since we try to age out the Summer plants, but keep an eye on the nighttime temperatures that seem to drop quickly.
I’ll chat about a couple veggies specifically below, but special shout out to those cherry tomatoes that just keep giving and giving. I swear I pick 10 pounds worth and I look the next day and there’s 5 more pounds. Basically we’re throwing them in our mouth as we pick them and making lots of cherry tomato sauce and slow cooker cherry tomatoes.
Potatoes! Potatoes! Potatoes! So many potatoes. After we picked 90 pounds worth of potatoes, we still found a couple more hiding under the soil.
We grew so many onions this Summer, much to Matthew’s delight. These are candy onions which have a very sweet taste to them. They’re so good, Enceladus will literally take a bite out of them raw and then ask for another! We made a big batch of caramelized onions to freeze, we throw these on top of basically everything during the Winter!
Peppers! So many peppers! Bell peppers! Anaheim peppers! Shishito Peppers! I will make a couple pans filled with these peppers, roast them up and make diced chiles to freeze for Winter.
This has been a green bean Summer. Our bean plants have never performed this well, so stay tuned to a post dedicated to them because they deserve it. We’ve been making endless casseroles, roasting them, slow cooker green beans and freezing the beans.
Hope you liked this week’s garden harvest! Please share with me in the comments what you’re growing and picking right now!
